A friend of mine described my new series of paintings as “gemstones.” I must admit, I had never considered the polygon shapes in my paintings as facets of a stone. The more pieces I create with this approach, the more I see and feel the connection my friend was referring to. Originally I titled this show as “Wavelength,” in relation to how different wavelengths of light appear to our eyes as different colors. However the comparison of shaping rough stones into beautiful gems, certainly echo my current painting process and the deeper meaning which inspired these works.
The metaphor of shaping rough stones into beautiful gems. Reflecting on the desire, the work, the passing of time, the end goal of taking something without much shape, dimension and bringing order, bringing beauty.
